Silk: the Temptress Unraveled
Materials fee: $50
Artisans have been unraveling the mysteries of silk throughout time. Participants in this class will reel silk cocoons using traditional tools and stretch cocoons into mawata (hankies) for spinning. They will learn drafting and spinning techniques for types and preparations of silk available to hand spinners today, from hankies, silk waste, muga, eri, to the finest mulberry silk. Participants will blend silk with other exotic fibres to create luxurious yarns.
Materials fee covers class handout, silk cocoons, at least 10 different varieties and preparations of silk fibre, and of exotic fibres for blending.
Students will need to bring:
• Spinning wheel
• Extra bobbins or spindles (several weights/sizes)
• Lazy kate
• Hand cards
• Niddy noddy
Equipment should be in good working order, and students must know how to use their equipment, whether it be a wheel or a spindle.
